Fuses for protection of DC circuits
DC circuits put high demands on the protective device. The absence of natural voltage zero makes it considerable more difficult to interrupt faults, the fuse is in most cases the best solution.
It is recommended to use fuses that are tested for use in DC circuits. For some circuits, a standard AC fuse may work but it has to be verified against the circuit.
The most important parameters for proper sizing are information regarding current, prospective short circuit current and the time constant of the circuit, L/R, in ms. It may be difficult to obtain information regarding the time constant. Most DC circuits have a time constant of 10 ms, higher time constant is unusual and is mainly only found in traction systems.
Modern battery systems such as in electric vehicles impose new demands on the protective device, the batteries are sensitive and usually require a very fast protection.
